Microplastics in Drinking Water: What We Know and What Removes Them

Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5 millimeters, and studies have found them in both tap and bottled water. The World Health Organization's 2019 review found no evidence of a health risk at the levels measured so far, but called for more research, especially on the smallest particles. If you want to cut your exposure, reverse osmosis removes particles far smaller than most microplastics.

Where They Come From

Microplastics come from plastic breaking down: packaging, synthetic clothing fibers, tire dust and litter. They reach rivers, oceans and groundwater, and from there drinking water. Bottled water can also pick up particles from the bottle and cap.

What the Science Says So Far

  • The WHO found no current evidence of a human health risk from microplastics at the levels found in drinking water.

  • The data is limited, and testing methods vary a lot between studies.

  • Treatment that removes particles and pathogens also removes most microplastics.

  • More research is needed on nanoplastics and long-term exposure.

Research has moved fast since 2019, with newer studies looking at nanoplastics in bottled water. It's a topic to watch, not a reason to panic.

Reverse Osmosis

RO is the finest filtration available for a home, with a membrane far tighter than any microplastic particle. The Micromax 8500 sits under the kitchen sink and also reduces PFAS and lead.

Other Ways to Cut Exposure

  • Carbon block filters catch many larger particles, depending on their rating.

  • Drink filtered tap water instead of bottled to avoid particles shed by bottles.

  • Don't heat food or drinks in plastic. Heat can release more particles.

Compare bottled water vs. filtered tap water.

Is There Microplastic in Miami Tap Water?

Microplastics have been found in tap water worldwide, and South Florida is no exception. Utilities aren't required to test for them yet, so their annual reports won't list them.

Common Questions

Does reverse osmosis remove microplastics? Yes. An RO membrane filters out particles far smaller than microplastics.

Is bottled water free of microplastics? No. Studies have found microplastics in bottled water too, sometimes at higher levels than tap water.

Are microplastics in Miami tap water? Microplastics have been found in tap and bottled water worldwide. Utilities aren't required to test for them yet, and testing methods are still being standardized.

Are microplastics harmful? The WHO found no current evidence of a health risk from microplastics at the levels found in drinking water, but research is limited and ongoing.

Do pitcher filters remove microplastics? Some reduce larger particles, but performance varies. Look for a filter certified for particulate reduction, or use reverse osmosis.

Does boiling water remove microplastics? Boiling isn't a reliable way to remove microplastics. Filtration is more effective.
