Bottled Water vs. Filtered Tap Water in Miami: Cost, Plastic and PFAS

Bottled water isn't automatically cleaner than tap water. The FDA regulates it with standards that largely mirror EPA's tap water rules. For most Miami families, filtered tap water from a certified reverse osmosis system matches or beats bottled water on quality, costs far less per gallon over time, and cuts plastic waste.

How Bottled Water Is Regulated

The FDA regulates bottled water as a food, and its quality standards largely follow EPA's tap water limits. In April 2025 the FDA shared results from testing 197 samples of purified, spring, artesian and mineral water. Ten had detectable PFAS, and none were above what EPA allows in tap water. That's reassuring, but bottled water isn't automatically PFAS-free. Read the FDA's PFAS testing results.

Cost

A family that drinks 2 gallons a day goes through more than 700 gallons a year. Delivery jugs and cases add up quickly, while RO water costs a fraction of that per gallon once the system is installed. Filters need changing about once a year.

Side-by-Side Comparison

  • Standards: bottled follows FDA rules based on EPA limits. Filtered tap adds your filter's NSF certification on top of EPA standards.

  • PFAS: bottled is usually low, not always zero. RO reduces it when certified to NSF/ANSI 53 or 58.

  • Microplastics: found in many bottled brands. Reduced by the RO membrane.

  • Plastic waste: bottles and jugs vs. none.

  • Convenience: hauling and storage vs. water on tap at the kitchen sink.

When Bottled Water Makes Sense

Bottled-Quality Water From Your Tap

The Micromax 8500 reverse osmosis system is certified to NSF/ANSI 58, 42, 53, 401 and 372. It reduces PFAS, lead and other contaminants, has its own faucet, and can feed your refrigerator for filtered ice and water.

Common Questions

Is bottled water safer than Miami tap water? Not necessarily. Both meet similar standards, and certified RO lets you control what's removed.

Is RO water the same as purified bottled water? Many purified bottled waters are made with reverse osmosis, the same process as an under-sink RO system.

How much does bottled water cost compared with filtered water? Bottled water costs much more per gallon. Once an RO system is installed, the main ongoing cost is filter changes.

Who regulates bottled water? The FDA regulates bottled water as a food. EPA regulates public tap water.

Does bottled water contain PFAS? Sometimes. In FDA testing of 197 samples, 10 had detectable PFAS, and none were above EPA's tap water limits.

Should I keep bottled water for emergencies? Yes. Keep a supply for hurricanes and boil water notices, even if you filter tap water every day.
